New round of call for participation – TeRMIS workshop

New deadline: June, 30th 2019

New round of call for participation to the 1st edition of TeRMIS – a workshop about Teaching Empirical Research Methods in Information Systems. Held at the 10th Scandinavian Conference in Information Systems (SCIS/IRIS), Nokia, Finland, 10-14 August 2019.

Organizers: Elena Parmiggiani; Babak Farshchian; Tangni Dahl-Jørgensen; Farzana Quayyum (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway)

Come and join us in defining the future curriculum to teach empirical research methods in Information Systems. The workshop will center on group discussions focusing on empirical cases provided by participants on teaching research methods in IS and other related fields.

There are no prerequisites to join. If you are interested in participating in the workshop or have any questions about the TeRMIS workshop, please email tangni.c.dahl-jorgensen@ntnu.no within the 30th of June.

Background

The surge of interest for digitalization across research domains presents challenges for educating undergraduate and graduate students in conducting empirical research, due to the increasing breadth of disciplines, data collection and analysis approaches (e.g., mixed methods), and the variety of digital data sources involved in conducting research in IS. For example, training students to search digital data sources and assess their relevance and veracity is increasingly difficult. Moreover, although a large set of the research methods adopted in IS comes from social science, teaching students how to adapt these methods to conduct research of increasingly digital settings is non-trivial. Having conducted a literature review, it is apparent that there are few in the IS-community sharing experiences of teaching research methods.

During the 2019 SCIS/IRIS conference, researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology will be holding a workshop about teaching empirical research methods. The main aim of this workshop is to build a network of Scandinavian and international scholars that will serve as a platform to share concerns, lessons learned, and to propose solutions towards improving the agenda for teaching empirical research methods in IS and the neighboring fields on the master and PhD level.

We invite scholars from one of the following categories:

  • Scholars in IS (or neighboring fields) who have experience in teaching empirical research methods at master or PhD level;
  • Scholars in IS (or neighboring fields) who focus on research methods as part of their supervision strategy;
  • Practitioners who need to develop internal competence in conducting empirical research.

Expected outcomes:

  • Establishing a research network focused on teaching empirical research methods in IS;
  • A call for papers for an edited book, including peer-reviewed contributions and reflections by the workshop participants;
  • A compiled manual, providing an overview of the best practices in teaching empirical research method in IS and neighboring fields, that could serve as a guide for teachers and supervisors at the master and PhD level;
  • A working version of a curriculum on teaching empirical methods in IS (at least at the PhD level).
